2005 Home & Business Showcase

October 15, 2005 is the date. Mississinewa High School is the location. And, the name of the event is the Gas City Area Chamber Home and Business Showcase. If your business has not signed up yet, feel free to contact the Chamber office, 674-7545, and reserve your spot.

You can still donate items for the silent auction which is a great opportunity for you to advertise your business if you are not taking advantage of having a booth. We welcome your participation in whatever way you can support our community event. Invite your friends, family and neighbors to come check things out from 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM for the general public, preceded by a business-to-business time from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM.

Signs and banners are decorating the streets letting you know this date is fast approaching. We thank everyone for their support and look forward to having a wonderful event on the 15th.

Does Our Chamber Have Members Like This One?

This story was told to me by another Chamber Executive:

He said, "I recently visited with a Chamber member who couldn't understand why other local business people weren't visiting his business. As we talked longer, here's what I discovered:"

He maintains his home in another community, does his banking there, and purchased his business alarm system out of town, as well as his office supplies. His car license plate shows it was purchased in another town and is serviced there. It was clear by now that He was missing many local business opportunities.

My advice to him:

  1. Spend your money where your business is located. Get a copy of the Chamber membership and do business with the people on that list. As you shop, introduce yourself to the business owner or manager and let them know you are also a Chamber member.

  2. Get involved in the Chamber and community. Work on a Chamber committee or project and attend a mixer or other event. Join a local service club.

  3. Invite business people to your business. If you plan to meet someone, ask them to come to your business, if only for a cup of coffee. Schedule a Chamber open house/Mixer, or send a direct mail letter to every Chamber member offering a discount or small gift they must pick up at your store. Then make sure to meet them when they come in.

  4. Reaching out within the community and getting to know people is the most basic way to promote a business, and getting involved in the Chamber is the most important way to accomplish this.
